I have a sunroom on the front of my condo...it's actually my favorite room in the house. I put a small tabletop tree in the corner so all my neighbors can enjoy it also. This year I put a few of my small red and white quilts at the base of the tree.
This is my December project. It's called "La Fete De Noel" fabrics are by French General. It is made with a layer cake (10 inch squares) of fabric...absolutely no fabric waste in cutting. That's something I really like!

Lastly, my little feather tree door hanging...I just finished it today! It's a pattern by Lori Smith, from her pattern "Quilt Squares #10". It finishes about 12 inches square. Machine quilted, started Friday afternoon and finished on Saturday. If it's not an heirloom quilt, I machine quilt it and apply the binding completely by machine. I do like a nice bias strip binding!

These are pictures from our June Christmas Club meeting. The photo below is an 8x8" pan that you could bring cookies or perhaps peppermint brownies to a friends Christmas get-together. You start with two 12" squares of fabric, sew them wrong sides together (with or without batting), and bind the edges. The corners are simply tied together with ribbon.

I missed May's Rudy Day (May 25) but I decided to post today and

give you a rundown on activities for May. Perhaps you can find

a few minutes here and there to be thinking about:

New themes for your decorating or Christmas party.

Peppermint is always a fun theme.

Set your table with some dishware that carries

out your peppermint theme.

We have a new Christmas club that meets at our local quilt shop on the 3rd Thursday of the month. Oddly enough, that puts the meeting very close to Rudy Day (celebrated on the 25th day of every month)! We had several ideas for small make-ahead gifts. Among them are these cute fabric baskets. You can use them for candy dishes, in the craft room for small items (thread, buttons?), or in the kitchen (with tea bags?) etc. etc. I'm sure you can come up with some ideas, too.

The item on the left is a mug wrap. It wraps around a coffee mug, and gives you lots of little pockets to corral your small items: pens, pencils, small scissors, etc.
I think my mom needs one near her chair with her crossword puzzle pencils and tv remote.
Small potholders and mats for hot pans/casserole dishes are always nice. Choose fabrics in your friend's kitchen colors.
The green tablerunner, below, is my version of the simple tablerunner. The 18 inch square pillow on the bed is one of my favorite projects. It says "Dear Santa....I can explain!" It just slips over the pillow that is on display 11 months out of the year.
I've been having a lot of fun making walker bags for my 96-year old mother, who lives in Florida. The first bag was made of bingo fabrics. I will have to dig up a photo of it to show you! Bag #2 has pink flamingos on it. I added the little cell phone pocket to the pattern. You can download the walker bag pattern from Craftsy from a vendor called "BucketsGoneWild." It was free!

I also found a free very simple pattern to make tissue holders to coordinate with her wardrobe of walker bags. I still have to make her Christmas bag!
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: large;">I've been away from my Christmas blog for awhile, but I just discovered that Ginger at Rudolph Ramblings has posted some very helpful Christmas planning pages that you can print out and add to your Christmas notebook. You can visit her at: <span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: large;">http://rudolphday.blogspot.com/
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: large;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: large;">Of course, I couldn't resist the Vintage Rudolph party photos, above! That Rudy sure is a cutie! For those of you who don't know, we celebrate "Rudy Day" each month on the 25th. It helps us keep the spirit of Christmas alive, and helps us by taking time to do a little planning ahead.

I haven't posted some photos of my Christmas decorations from last year, so I thought I would share a few of them with you now--in the spirit of "Christmas in July." This picture is of our master bedroom, with my "Christmas in the Cabin" quilt. It is a log cabin quilt made from 2.5 inch strips. It's one of my all-time favorite quilts, and one that I actually hand quilted myself. This setting is called the barn raising pattern. The quilt on the wall at the head of the bed is a Fons and Porter pattern. I used all fabrics from my stash, and the brick red and tan fabrics I used for the alternate blocks dictated how big I could make this quilt. The star blocks are 8 inches square, so if you are a quilter it would be easy for you to figure out this pattern on your own. I call it "Scrappy Stars."

This is a little corner of our master bedroom. It houses a small desk with a chair, my Thimbleberries table topper in red/green/cream fabrics, a basket of my favorite Christmas magazines and a few other trinkets. Establishing a small "Christmas Nook" is step 1 on the "Organized for Christmas website. http://christmas.organizedhome.com/ See the "June Rudolph Club Meeting" post for more information.

This blue dry sink has been in the foyer, the dining room, the kitchen, and currently the living room. It holds my Jim Shore nativity set and a few decorative candles. My goal this year is to make a log cabin quilt (about 13 x 30 inches) for the base of the nativity set. The fabrics are in cream and gold, and I have 26 of the 30 total blocks made already. As a matter of fact, when I finish this post I'm going to make the last 4 blocks and hopefully get it sewn together this weekend. So stay tuned for more, and I will post photos when completed. I think I will add some trees to the setting this year...can't decide between white or green, but we'll see what we can find. Hopefully Hobby Lobby or AC Moore will have some goodies to choose from!

This is our fireplace mantel, decked out this year with a "White Christmas" theme. I grew up in northern Illinois and so Christmas doesn't seem like Christmas without some snow. Here in
Virginia we can pretty much expect to NOT have snow at Christmas! The two little Christmas quilts cover baskets with my favorite magazines. I am a magazine junkie, I admit it. The two little kissing bears are from Hallmark.

Here is our tree this past year with lots of white and some blue, something completely different from all the reds and greens I normally use. My favorite part of the holiday season is enjoying the glow from the tree in the evening with all my presents bought, wrapped and under the tree. It's such a comforting feeling! I think I like the addition of the bow on the top!

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">I hope you all are enjoying a little Christmas in July. Did you catch the fun scrapbook day on HSN? I had to buy some Anna Griffin, she can do no wrong, and I love her designs and card kits. Hallmark Channel has featured a Christmas movie each evening this week, and this morning hubby and I watched HOME ALONE II...the one they filmed at the Plaza Hotel in NYC. If that doesn't get you in the Christmas mood, nothing will! Love the decorations, and the scene at the end at the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree. Makes me want to turn the air conditioning down a few degrees so I can enjoy a cup of my favorite Vienna Coffee. (It's only 91 degrees outside today in Virginia)

So in keeping with this Christmas in July, I've pulled out some of my Christmas books and magazines, and done a little daydreaming. I found some wonderful recipes in the Gooseberry Patch cookbook. Some can even go in the crockpot, which works very well you have a busy day shopping, cleaning....or sewing. There are several recipes I want to try, and if I really like them, I'll include them in my Christmas recipe book collection.

I know this doesn't look like very much right now, but I am making a total of 30 of these paper pieced log cabin blocks. They will measure 3 inches when finished. Some of the gold fabrics have sparkly threads in them. I am creating a small table runner to put my Jim Shore Nativity set on. It's something I wanted to do last year but didn't get around to it. Between yesterday and today I've managed to make 20 of the 30 that I need. I can design these blocks very easily in Electric Quilt software, and print them out on paper especially made for paper pieced patterns. (Carol Doak makes the nicest paper that tears very easily.) If you are into quilting, I can't tell you how much fun I've had with this quilt design software.

Stay tuned for more, and I'll keep you abreast of my progress with this little gold log cabin project.

Till next time, friends, peace and joy to you and yours!
I love the designs by Graphic 45, and would love to share this video link with you. I think you'll agree, it's a gorgeous design! Wouldn't it be fun to tuck a gift card for that "hard to buy person" on your list into a card like this? They could save the card to use as a Christmas decoration each year. Check out the video to make it at: Graphic 45 card

My friend Sandra and I decided to have a little crafty fun and make some Christmas cards. We're not sure if we're going to keep them for our own decorations or mail them out!

We made 2 identical cards, one to keep for ourself and one to share. This was a kit I bought from QVC...it's by Anna Griffin, who can do no wrong.

The designs included plain cards and envelopes, background papers, the designs such as Stocking, santa, snowman, etc, stickers and some of the ribbons. I had a few ribbons of my own to include, such as the red/green plaid. Also included are the verses written on inserts for the inside of the card.

They're very easy and fun to do. All you need to add is the tape runner.

There's our boy, Rudy! Smack in the middle of all the fun. It was a fun activity to share with my friend Sandra (on the right, in the black/ivory/gold sweater). That's me on the left in the red sweater, in my craft room.

We had a chicken salad lunch and spent the day together. Next time let's put on the Christmas music, ok Sandra?!

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The first give-away consists of 2 magazines: the November-December 2010 issue of Sandra Lee's Semi-Homemade (I miss that magazine, do you?). It has about 60 recipes, from cocktails, appetizers, mains, sides, and of course, sweets. And of course, it has the gorgeous photos and time-saving tips Sandra is known for. The second magazine is the November-December 2009 issue of Southern Lady magazine. It only has about 18 recipes, but I think you'll agree the beautiful ads in the magazine are even fun. There are several tablescapes featured, including a darling one set for the children.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The second give-away is the book "The Farm Chicks Christmas." If you love vintage 1950's, you'll really enjoy this book. Serena Thompson--perhaps you remember her from Country Living magazine--takes you to her home decorated for Christmas and the homes of 3 of her friends. While she does include some recipes, this is not a cookbook. I guess they call it a "lifestyle" book. It has vintage decorating and craft ideas. I've included a few photos below to show you some interior pages.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">If you would like to be included in the drawing for these 2 give-aways, you need to do 2 things: leave me a comment and tell me about one of your favorite Christmas blogs or websites (mine and yours excluded!) and leave me your email address.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I'll leave the give-away open for comments until December 1, so spread the word.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I'll have another post for November "Rudy Day" Saturday or Sunday. Thanks for stopping by, and may you and yours be blessed this Christmas season.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Till next time!

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Homemade Peppermint Bark
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Ingredients/Tools:

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">6 ounces of semi sweet chocolate, coarsely chopped

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">6 ounces of white chocolate, coarsely chopped

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">2 teaspoons vegetable oil

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">1/2 cup crushed candy canes

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">9" baking sheet

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">aluminum foil

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Directions:

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Line the bottom and sides of your baking sheet with foil; smooth out any wrinkles

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Melt the semi sweet chocolate and 1 teaspoon of the oil in a heatproof bowl over a saucepan of simmering water.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Immediately pour the melted chocolate into the prepared pan; spread the chocolate out with a spatula (or tilt the pan) to even it out after pouring it onto the pan.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Place the pan into the fridge for about 30 minutes, or until the chocolate has set.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Next, melt the white chocolate and remaining 1 teaspoon of oil, as you did with the semi sweet chocolate.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Immediately pour the white chocolate over the set, semi sweet chocolate, and spread it out evenly.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Sprinkle the crushed candy cane evenly over top of the white chocolate.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Place the pan back into the fridge for another 30 minutes, or until the chocolate is set.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Once set, you can remove the bark from the pan by lifting the foil.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Break the bark into small, irregular pieces. The bark can be stored in an air tight container in the fridge up to 2 weeks; makes 25 pieces.

Till next time, Christmas blessings to you and yours,
I haven't done anything Christmasy in awhile, so I thought I would post a little Christmas quilt show for you! Who can resist these happy penguins?!
Marla made all of us a red and white pincushion last Christmas. She was influenced by the red and white quilt exhibit in New York City during the year. Lucky Marla even got to see it! She said it was incredible.
I hope you enjoyed my little Christmas quilt show. It's also time for you to check out http://100daystochristmas.com to get started on your Christmas plans.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Did you catch Christmas in July on QVC today? I couldn't resist the Jim Shore Sleigh Basket with 4 ornaments. I have a few other Jim Shore items--the nativity and 3 angels. As a quilter, I just love his stuff! So this will be featured in my Christmas decorations this year.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">If you're looking for an easy project to whip up for a gift or for yourself, how about a nice tablerunner? This one was easy, very Christmasy, and simple enough that whatever I put on it will be the centerpoint.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">And for some reason, I haven't put up my little Dept. 56 Christmas Village in awhile, so it was fun to bring it out this past December. I love my little white birch trees, but I think I'd like to add some evergreen trees this year.
We love it so much, it was instrumental in our decision to leave St. Louis, Missouri and make Virginia our home. I am really enjoying the Gooseberry Patch cookbooks and website. I happened to stumble across this Open House You Tube video, and it couldn't be more fun! It should really get you in the mood for our Christmas in July celebration.

Holiday blessings to you and yours!
As hubby likes to say, "we're havin' fun now!" I found this darling gingerbread Christmas table theme at http://ladykatherineteaparlor.blogspot.com/. (See her post for December 2009.) This woman seriously knows how to have a good time! This is how she sets the table for her grandchildren when they come for breakfast on Christmas morning.
And of course, you must make some gingerbread cake (tastes great with cream cheese icing), or gingerbread cookies. Or brew yourself a cup of gingerbread tea. I can almost smell it now!
The Rudy Day theme for June is "Themes." I'm not exactly sure where other people are taking this idea, but when I think about Christmas themes, I think about the years I had an angel tree...a beautiful tall Christmas tree full of an assortment of angel ornaments. Then there was the year I focused on poinsettias...poinsettias in my fireplace garland, individual silk poinsettia blooms on the Christmas tree. One year we focused on music..my husband is an organist and plays the electronic keyboard. We had musical notes and different instrument ornaments on the tree.

One of my favorite Christmas themes is "Gingerbread." I have loved gingerbread ever since I can remember. I used to love getting my December issue of Good Housekeeping, they would frequently have gorgeous Gingerbread Houses that were the recent contest winners. I loved the architecture created with candies and icing, the landscaping that resembled real trees, shrubs and flowers. How I wish I had the talent to create such masterpieces!

I promised you another post about the Christmas Notebook I am working on to keep my favorite Christmas recipes. I enjoy scrapbooking very much, I guess playing with colored paper is kin to playing with colored fabrics! I thought I would share with you how my notebook is shaping up. Here is the cover...The colors did not scan very well. The background for "Joy" and "Holiday Meals" is a deep Hunter Green. The cover sheet gets placed in the clear plastic front of a 1.5 inch 3-ring binder. Most of the papers and stickers are from a Gooseberry Patch kit. The remaining papers I purchased at Michaels. I used two Martha Stewart punches; the first is called "Sunburst" and the second is called "Apron Lace." The font is cut at 1.5 inches from my Cricut; the cartridge is called "From My Kitchen."
So far I have made 7 divisions, and will be able to add more if needed. They are:
1. Appetizers
2. Breads
3. Desserts
4. Main Dishes
5. Salads
6. Sides
7. Tablescapes. I love collecting pictures of different Christmas dishes, centerpieces, napkins, themes, the whole thing!
I already realize I need a beverage catagory, so I can add my warm apple cider and sangria to my list of keepers.
This notebook is obviously a work in progress, and it will take more time to complete it, but I love the idea of having everything in one place.
And here is the notebook...ready for a cup of tea and some time to decide what I want to make next...I think apple strudel!
As we approach May 25, it's time to spend a little effort working towards Christmas 2012. After all, it's only 214 days away! One of the ways we are encouraged to get ready for Christmas throughout the year is by making a list of gifts we want to make. The uber-organized will make a list with dates for beginning and completing the project. They will purchase the necessary materials and put them and the instructions in a suitable size container. And they will remember where they put them so they can easily put their hands on them when they're ready to start ;-) Needless to say, I am not uber-organized.

But I am working on two Christmas gifts. I'm making lap size quilts for my two grandchildren. The idea is they could take them on overnights with friends or on camping trips in their camper. The pattern I used is a Merry Mayhem pattern, that was their mystery project for January 1 of this year. It's an easy pattern that begins with a 2.5 inch Jelly Roll. Henry's has little vintage campers and woodland animals, Hadley's has colorful birds (they have a pet Blue Conyer parrot "Kiwi"). They are both almost ready to take to the quilters.

This quilt measures about 25 inches square and is made of mostly Jo Morton fabrics. The logs in the log cabin blocks finish at 1/2 inch.

This is still a top...it's not yet quilted. I stitched this up last fall with several friends. It is a "Mystery Quilt"--you don't know what the end result will look like when you start it. It's called "Christmas Lights" and is from Quiltmaker magazine. Made fall of 2011. It's almost a queen size.

Sorry for the dark photo, I will have to retake this some day! This is one of my all-time favorite quilts. It's called "Bulls-Eye" and is a raggedy-edge quilt. It's from a book called "Traditions", I'm sorry I've forgotten the author's name. It is a twin size quilt.

The quilt on the wall is from Fons and Porter magazine. I used all scraps to make it. It was limited in size because my challenge was to not buy any new fabric for this quilt. It would fit a twin size bed, but currently hangs year-round behind our queen size bed.

The quilt on the bed is a log cabin Christmas quilt made from 2.5 inch strips. We had a program at our quilt guild about cutting your scraps into 2.5 inch strips. I came home that night and cut all my leftover Christmas scraps into logs to make this quilt. It has some darling fabrics in it...kitties with Christmas stockings, for example.

Each month has a specific theme, although you can do whatever you would like to do. Please join us in the forums at http://magicalholidayhome.com/ to get in on the fun!

January - We looked at our Christmas notebooks and updated them, paying attention to what worked, what didn't work, what we would like to plan for this coming year. We also looked at our Christmas budget and took a realistic look at what we spent.

February - We began our "Chistmas Letter" to friends and family members. We assembled a "Rudolph Day" tote bag, basket, or box with items we will need during the year to help celebrate Rudy day: a calendar, our Christmas notebook, perhaps a photo book with pictures of our family in their Christmas outfits, some colorful pens to journal with, a Christmas mug for our cocoa or tea--or maybe even Christmas socks! We assessed how many and what kind of presents we wanted to hand make this year. We began assembling kits for each project, and created a schedule to complete these projects in a reasonable amount of time. We began our master gift list and plan to purchase at least 1 gift each month for someone on our list.

March - Books and Movie month. We inventoried our books and movies and made a list of any purchases we would like to make for the coming year. It's also fun to list your top 5 (or 10) to make sure that you view them each year.

April - is Christmas Dishes month. We looked over our Christmas dishes, noting what we would like to add to our dish inventory this year. We organized them all in one place. We checked out our linens--tablecloths, placemats, napkins, napkin rings--spot checked and laundered to make sure they are ready to go to work. We posted some fun pictures of table settings, and checked other websites for ideas for the upcoming year. We added our ideas to our Christmas notebooks. Consider the whole idea of "Christmas magic" and what role it should play (see magicalholidayhome.com for ideas re: stockings, elfs, etc.)

May - We will be looking at menu ideas for holiday meals and quick menu ideas for "meals on the run." We also are encouraged to begin trying recipes, keeping ones we particularly like in our Christmas notebooks. Or perhaps you'll want to develop your own Christmas cookbook or recipe box.

June - Themes/Party Planning ideas and our Master Gift List. Perhaps you'll want a theme to your decorating that is different from previous years, i.e. gingerbread in the kitchen, or an all red and white tree in the foyer, etc. Sketch out or clip ideas from magazines or web sites.

July - We will purchase all stocking stuffers this month. If you plan to make your Christmas cards, now is the time to get all the papers, ribbons, envelopes, stamps and inks, etc. together and make those cards. Have a festive card making day with Christmas music playing in the background! Sign those cards and write short notes. Update your Christmas card address list and print the labels or envelopes out. Get your family photo taken to include in your card and have them printed. Go over that master gift list--have you purchased at least half of your gifts or more?

August - Time to finish up with the craft projects you have been working on.

September - Time to think about baking projects for November. List recipes you want to try--desserts, cookies, breads--and make a master grocery shopping list. Begin purchasing an extra staple or two each time you go to the grocery store. Consider any ornaments you need to purchase and/or want to make. Be on the lookout for these items to hit the store shelves. Buy early for the best selection.

October - Gift in a Jar or Basket month. Master gift list checkup. You should be about finished buying gifts now! Check your wrapping paper stash, tape, gift tags, colored pens. Resupply as necessary.

November - Purchase or unpack your advent calendar. Wrap gifts by Thanksgiving. The idea is to have December available to spend time with your family--not panicing over not getting things done!

December - Celebrate with your family and friends!
